MMC

I’m an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture at Texas A&M University. My research interests include teacher preparation in mathematics education, problem solving, and cross- cultural studies. Prior to my doctoral studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, I was employed with the Miami Dade County Schools as both a teacher and an assistant principal. I have over 30 peer-reviewed publications, and 40 national and international presentations. At Texas A&M, I have taught elementary mathematics and science methods science methods and problem solving to undergraduate elementary and middle-school pre-service teachers and secondary methods to post baccalaureate graduate students. Graduate class teaching has included: Analysis of Teaching Behaviors, Cognitive Structures in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, and Teaching and Learning Pattern and Change Concepts.

I work extensively with public schools and school districts planning mathematics professional developments and designing mathematics learning activities. I am a Co-PI and researcher on the Aggie Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Aggie-STEM) Center housed at Texas A & M University in partnership with the Dallas Independent School District. The AggieSTEM mission is to transform lives by catalyzing deep and replicable transformations in mathematics and science education through project-based learning (PBL). The goal of this partnership is to establish a center for STEM education that involves research and provides information on best practices for innovative teaching and learning. I work with Carter High School, an urban minority school in Dallas coordinating and providing support to teachers and administrators in the development of PBLs. Workshops presented have included the use of Vernier probes, graphing calculators, smart boards, rubrics, integration of TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills), rocketry projects, and the basics of PBL development. Our partnership also now extends to the Waco and Hearne Independent School District.

Additionally I am associate editor for the School Science and Mathematics journal. I have written Effective Strategies for Middle School Mathematics Teachers, a chapter in Teacher Knowledge and Practice in Middle Grades Mathematics and Interdisciplinary PBLs, a chapter in a PBL book, edited through the Aggie STEM center. I am an editor and author of 3 chapters in our new Companion PBL text for teachers. I am president of the Southwest Education Research Association and a member of the American Education Research Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
