Etiquette and Protocol

Students may be unaware of certain difficulties in communicating over a distance, especially regarding the appropriateness of interrupting the instructor at various times. Set some ground rules at the beginning of the course in order to clarify when it is all right to stop the lecture.

 

Protocol

Protocol is the consideration of others and applies to both instructors and participants. Some helpful rules to follow are:

 

 

Protocol

Prior to the session:

    • Understand that interactive videoconferencing has great potential for interaction.
    • Plan, be prepared, have all materials at sites before sessions start
    • Rehearse

During the Session:

    • Start the session on time.
    • Provide large tent name cards for participants to prop in front of them
    • Begin with an introduction activity to engage participants.
    • Orient participants to the interactive videoconference environment and equipment; provide ample time for participants to practice.
    • Ask participants to limit excessive side conversations and distracting noises, such as rustling papers or tapping.
    • Explain logistics and site rules.
    • Explain discussion rules and any special signals you may have for participants to gain your attention.
    • Discuss the distribution of materials.
    • Encourage participants to be assertive and to share experiences during class sessions.
    • Be specific about how you would like discussions to take place.
    • Allow ample time for responses and encourage everyone to participate.
    • Allow time for periodic breaks, one short break each hour is a good rule of thumb.
    • Follow up on all questions and give necessary feedback.

During and after the session:

    • Follow up on all questions and give timely and constructive feedback
