Audio: Volume and Microphones

If you can't hear any audio, make sure audio is up on TV monitors and Polycom.

Adjust volume in room directly on the TV monitors

  • Normal volume from FAR site is three fourths of the way up when in a video conference.
Adjust volume in room using Polycom remote.
  • Adjust sound from FAR site with the Polycom remote using the volume buttons and set to user preference. The Polycom Microphones are mounted into the ceiling and when a red light is lit up it means the mics are muted. Also, when muted an icon of a microphone with a line through it appears on the monitors.

Be careful because when the volume is set too high, then it causes the other site to hear an echo. Check the volume on the TV monitors, remote, and mixer. Normal setting is in the middle.

Remember the Rule of Audio:
If YOUR site does NOT hear the echo - then it is being caused by your site.
If YOUR site DOES hear the echo - then it is coming from another site.

Adjusting volume for FAR site
  • If FAR site cannot hear, ask them to raise their speaker volume.
  • If FAR Site is having trouble hearing the site in Harrington, then ask the speaker to use the podium or wireless microphone and/or adjust the mixer in rooms 614 and 408.
  • When connected through TTVN, it is sometimes helpful to ask Ops (862-2241) to "come into" the videoconference. They can monitor the volume and let each site know what to do. Sometimes, TTVN can raise the volume through the controls they have.

Wireless Microphone (Lapel Mic)

  • To use the wireless microphone in room 408 and 614, turn the power switch on the side to the on position so that the green light comes on and clip the microphone to your collar. The receiver is located under the two televisions in the back of the rooms. If the red Low Bat light comes on the battery needs to be replaced. It uses a nine volt battery.

Podium Microphones

  • The podium microphone in room 408 and 614 will pick up the lecturer. If the lecturer has a very soft voice, it would be more appropriate to use the wireless microphone.

Mixer Controls

  • The mixer controls the volume of hanging microphones in rooms 614 and 408. The mixer is located under the two televisions in the back of the room.
  • Room 408 -
    • Knob 1 controls the hanging microphone on the left side of the room. Knob 2 controls the hanging microphone on the right side of the room. Knob 3 is the podium microphone adjustment. Knob 4 is the wireless microphone adjustment.
  • Room 614 -
    • Start counting with a "One" (1) with the microphone hanging above the table on the right hand side by the main door. Now, proceed with 2, 3, etc. until you get to the microphone above the table on the left hand side by the other door. To see a graphical representation of this, click here.
